Introduction to Molecular Communication for W-Seminar Students
On 11th of November, an 11th-grade W-Seminar visited our department to learn more about “Molecular Communication (MC)”. Their host was the Institute for Digital Communications (IDC).
Timo Jakumeit gave a talk to 11th-grade W-Seminar students on “Molecular Communication (MC) – How Communication Engineering Can Be Used to Develop Novel Technologies in Medicine”. The presentation covered the basics of MC, a comparison to electromagnetic communication, and the fundamentals of modeling MC. It highlighted the Internet of Bio-Nano Things, showcasing medical applications such as health monitoring and targeted drug delivery. The talk also outlined current research at our chair, including projects on implantable device communication (ERMES project) and a 3D in vivo MC testbed.
Afterwards, Lukas Brand followed with a demonstration of a green fluorescent protein variant Dreiklang closed-loop testbed, showcasing the feasibility of MC in experimental settings. The event provided valuable input for the students’ W-Seminar on medical technology and offered insights into possible future study programs and career choices.
It was a great evening which offered valuable insight into research done by our department. We’re looking forward to further meetings!
