You can send a request to the CIP supervisor. We need your idm ID and whether you only need access for the current semester or until you leave FAU. In any case, printing is unfortunately not possible due to undefined billing modalities.
Actually nothing, your login is automatically deactivated.
If you requested 24/7 access before March 13, 2024, then you probably still have an old profile. Please contact us and we will update this.
You can access with the card the 3 entrances (middle and side). There is a reader on the side of the doors on the wall, this opens the lock and you can open the door. You have to be quick because the lock closes again after a few seconds.
There is a validation device in the middle of the elevators. At the main entrance between the doors on the side. This validation device allows you to refresh your card for 24 hours. This allows you to open the CIP EEI outside opening hours.
The CIP pool may only be used during courses or for free work. In the event of a violation, we reserve the right to exercise our house rules and to withdraw your access to the CIP pool and delete your account.
If a crime has occurred in the CIP pool, the video footage of the surveillance can be requested to be handed over to the police. Please inform those responsible in short time so that the automatic deletion can be stopped.

The CIP rooms are open Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Closed on public holidays. During opening hours, the doors of CIP-EEI/WW can be opened without an access card. An exception must be requested from the CIP supervisor.
Printing
In this case the print job is rejected by the system without a warning. You can only print to the associated printer on site. In the CIP pool EEI you can print on cipetlas1.e-technik.uni-erlangen.de and in the CIP pool WW on the printer cipwwlas1.e-technik.uni-erlangen.de.
This is excluded for data protection reasons.
At the moment the printing in our CIP-Pool is free of charge. We ask you to print responsible and thrifty, otherwise the offer will have to be discontinued!
When starting for the first time after a new installation, Windows does not yet know the printer. Just restart Windows again and the printer should be there.
Check if the multi-sheet feeder is open on the printer. Restart the print job. Contact us if the problem persists.
You want to print out a PDF? There are always some files that were created incorrectly and do not follow the rules exactly. Linux cannot cope with that. So try to print them out with Windows. Use the FAU Box to exchange the files or download it again.
Tips
Open a terminal and enter the following command:
testquota <return>
A window opens showing you how much data you have and where your big memory files are.
The easiest way to do this is via the FAUBox to exchange files online within the web interface. Every user who has an IDM account automatically has a FAUBox account.
Click on the white dots in the lower left.
Just copy them into the directory: „/student_share„. This directory can be written and read by anyone and is available on all machines. But be careful: it is emptied every day at midnight!
You also can use the FAUBox to exchange files. Every user who has an IDM account automatically has a FAUBox account.
In order to be able to run a script longer without staying logged in, the runtime of the Kerberos ticket must be extended. The Kerberos ticket is an automatically created element after login, which verifies the successful login of the user. For security reasons, the status of the ticket must be updated by logging in again or by unlocking the display after at least 10 hours with the user password, otherwise all of the user’s processes will be terminated. With Linux commands on the command line, the runtime can be increased to up to 7 days.
The whole thing only works if you log in locally or via ssh. It does not work via Remote Desktop (rdp).
Precise instructions can be found here from the RRZE (german language):
https://www.anleitungen.rrze.fau.de/betriebssysteme/linux/anbindung-an-die-kerberos-infrastruktur-des-rrze/kerberos-und-langlaufende-prozesse/
Windows can be started on a virtual machine if necessary. To do this, simply click on the Windows icon in the system tray. After it has booted, click anywhere on the window and log in as normal.
Attention: It is essential to shut down the Windows machine after the session has ended, otherwise Windows will start the next time that you are on the same computer with your login!
Did you clear your trash regularly? Empty it and you will have plenty of space again.
If you need a quota larger than 20GB, write an email to the CIP supervisor with a desired size and a short argument. Then we can increase the space.
The RRZE offers each student 2 GB of storage space on a central Windows server. The same storage is used here.
Click on the white triangle in the top right corner, then on your name and then on „Log Out“.
Your home directory is on the CIP server cip-eeiww2.rrze.uni-erlangen.de. Everyone has space for 20 GB of data. Incidentally, a login on the server is not possible, nor is it necessary, since all the directories that are required are mounted in all other machines.
Your home directory will now be mounted in /home/<idm user ID>. The easiest way to do this is to simply type „cd“ with no parameters.
The RRZE offers a free network drive as a home directory with a limited quota (employees 10GB, students 2GB). This means that at no time can you use more than the permitted storage space on the network drive.
To free up memory that may be in use, please try the following troubleshooting approaches first (see also https://www.anleitungen.rrze.fau.de/?p=8644#quota-exceeded).
Note: If a graphical login is no longer possible, you can switch to the text console with Ctrl+Alt+F3 and carry out the steps given below. After completing the work, exit the text console with exit and switch back to the graphical login with Alt+F2.
- Empty rubbish bin/trash
Empty the trash can by right-clicking on the corresponding desktop icon or by typing
rm -rI ~/.local/share/Trash
Explanation:
Deleted files are moved to the so-called recycle bin for easy recovery. The storage space is not freed until the recycle bin is emptied. - Clear cache directory
Delete the .cache directory in your home, eg by entering
rm -rI ~/.cache
Explanation:
Various programs temporarily store files here in order to speed up recurring access (e.g. web browsers). - Analyze memory usage and delete additional files if necessary
Create an overview of memory usage and find the biggest memory hogs by entering
du -sh ~/{.[!.]*,*} | sort -h
Explanation:
The command creates a list of all files and directories in your home and sorts them in ascending order of memory usage. This way you can find out what is using up the most memory and it might be worth cleaning up.
A notice:
On Linux, hidden files are marked with a dot at the beginning. To make them visible in your file manager, you can use the shortcut CTRL+H.
If these steps do not help you, please contact us again for a more detailed analysis of the problem.
Then you don’t have a print account yet. Just click away. It’s normal and no big problem. If you have a print account, a window with the current account balance will appear instead.
Maybe this error message appears: „… always running“. In this and any other cases open a console and enter the following commands:
Warning: any bookmarks will be lost and Firefox will be completely reset to the default settings.
cd <return> rm -r .mozilla <return>
After logging out and back in, it should work again.
